SURROGATE MOTHERS

A surrogate mother is a woman who races a child which is biologically not hers or it could be a woman who uses her body and eggs to be fertilized by another male. This usually happens, for example, to a married couple who can’t have children so doctors can use the husband’s sperm to fertilize the egg of another woman with a contract that they will race the child when it is born hens surrogacy is the use of a woman’s body to produce a child which won’t be kept by her. Within the British law, this is totally legal, providing there is a contractual agreement between the parties.

Did you know about 1400 babies are born every year through surrogacy? Surrogacy is becoming more and more common for intended mothers who can’t carry a pregnancy herself due to many problems. Sometimes intended mothers use surrogates mothers when their infertility is unexplained, or they have endured several miscarriages and getting pregnant and carrying to term hasn’t been successful for them. Sometimes couples use a surrogate due to their ages, or their sexual orientation (gay…). Surrogates often help gay men to create a family, and an egg donor is also required with surrogacy.

All surrogate mothers should be the minimum age of 21 years old and have already given birth to at least one healthy baby, and have at least one child under the age of 18 still living with them in the household. This is so to guarantee her health and so the surrogate mother understands what pregnancy and childbirth are about, what it means to have a baby and to be a parent, despite the child won’t be kept by her.  The surrogate must be deemed healthy, physically and mentally. Surrogates must always pass a psychological screening by a mental health professional or a psychologist.  This is so a mental health professional can uncover any sort of emotional issues that the surrogate mother may have, regarding releasing a baby to the intended parents after birth because you have to be

emotionally mature and ready enough to deal with it and to face 9 months of pregnancy.

Surrogacy became famous in the last 10 years, when people started to talk about it, without knowing it has always been practiced. 

However, in the 1980 the first paid traditional surrogacy arrangement was conducted. In this case, the surrogate mother, a 37-year old woman, was paid $10,000 for the successful delivery of a baby. Even though the procedure was extremely successful on a physical and mental level, the surrogate mother did not initially realize how strong her sentimental connection would have been with the baby , until it came time to give him up to the “real” intended parents. In fact, later on, the surrogate mother became an advocate against surrogacy, stating that it had a negative effect on her emotions, her family, and even her husband's career, because of her depression. This is one of the “because” of why many countries don’t accept surrogacy.

Furthermore, it is for this reason that even though surrogacy can be a very positive and rewarding experience for both the surrogate mother and the biological parents, it is also important for those who intend to become surrogate mothers to be not just physically prepared, but emotionally as well. Not long afterwards, in 1983,there  was the first successful pregnancy done via egg donation. In this case, a woman was able to give birth to a baby through the use of eggs that were donated from another. It was this event that later led to the first gestational surrogacy in 1985.

Una madre surrogata è una donna che porta in grembo un bambino che non è biologicamente il suo oppure è una donna che usa il suo corpo e le sue “uova” per essere fecondata da un altro uomo. Questo solitamente accade, per esempio, ad una coppia sposata che non può avere bambini e quindi i dottori possono usare lo sperma del marito per fecondare l’uovo di un’altra donna, assicurandosi che ci sia un contratto secondo il quale la donna porterà in grembo il bambino. Come si può ben dedurre, con la surrogazione si usa il corpo di una donna per generare un bambino che non sarà il suo. Secondo la legge inglese, questo è totalmente legale, assicurandosi che ci sia un contratto tra i due “clienti”.

Sapevate che circa 1400 bambini nascondo ogni anno con la surrogazione? La surrogazione sta diventando sempre più comune per le madri intenzionate ad avere un bimbo, che non possono portare avanti una gravidanza per svariati problemi. Qualche volta queste mamme “usano” le madri surrogate quando non ci sono spiegazioni per la loro infertilità oppure hanno perso già qualche bambino. Le coppie, la maggior parte delle volte, fanno ricorso alla surrogazione per la loro età oppure per il loro orientamento sessuale (gay..). Spesso le famiglie gay vengono aiutate dalle madri surrogate per creare una famiglia e renderli felici, dato che con la surrogazione si necessita anche dello sperma del padre.

Tutte le madri surrogate devono avere almeno 21 anni e devono già aver partorito almeno un bambino ed aver cresciuto un ragazzo sano di minimo 16 anni. Questo è per garantire la loro salute e per garantire che le madri surrogate sappiano cosa sia una gravidanza e la nascita di un bambino, cosa significhi essere un genitore, nonostante il nascituro non sarà cresciuto da loro. La madre surrogata deve essere sana fisicamente ma, soprattutto, mentalmente. Per questa ragione ,devono superare uno “screening” psicologico, sottopostogli da uno psicologo o

psichiatra, il quale potrebbe scoprire dei futuri problemi legati alla nascita del bambino. Bisogna essere emozionalmente mature e pronte abbastanza per affrontare 9 mesi di gravidanza.

La surrogazione è divenuta famosa negli ultimi 10 anni, nel momento in cui le persone hanno cominciato a parlarne, senza sapere che è sempre stata praticata.

Nel 1980 avvenne la prima surrogazione pagata. In questo caso, la madre surrogata, una donna di 37 anni, fu pagata $10,000 per la nascita di un bambino sano. Sebbene la procedura fosse estremamente andata a buon fine per la donna dal punto di vista fisico e mentale, la madre surrogata non capi’ inizialmente quanto forte fosse stato il legame sentimentale con il nascituro fino a quando nacque. Infatti, on il tempo, la madre surrogata non condivise più la pratica della surrogazione, a causa della sua depressione trasmessa alla famiglia e persino al marito. Questa è una delle ragioni per le quali molte nazioni non accettano la surrogazione.

E’ per questa ragione che, anche se la surrogazione può essere un’esperienza positiva per le due madri, è anche importante dire che le madri surrogate devono essere preparate non solo fisicamente ma anche psicologicamente. Non molto dopo, nel 1983, ci fu la prima surrogazione fatta tramite donazione di uova. In questo caso, una donna diede al mondo un bambino grazie all’uso delle uova, donatele da un’altra donna. Questo episodio fece si che ci fosse in seguito la prima surrogazione gestionale nel 1985.
